  • Get a sump pump with enough power to handle the volume of water that is coming into your basement.
  • Testing takes place by getting a 5-gallon bucket at first. Then, take the sump pit cover off with everything plugged up and ready for action. Start dumping water until the pump activates. The more critical application that you have or more likely that could have a flood then the more often you are probably going to want to perform this check.
  • You need to do something not very pleasant for anybody. But cleaning the pit, the interior of your sump pump out is important. Sump pumps that don’t turn as frequently or more prone usually get a lot of sediment. It is extremely important to clear stuff out. Use something like a shop vac or wet vac. When the pump doesn’t work frequently the water just saturates into the ground.
  • It is really useful to have a full backup system. In the instance of a power outage that the battery backup is going to run off when the primary pump doesn’t have electricity. A secondary pump would be helpful in a situation where the primary pump is not keeping up with the inflow. So there are multiple reasons to have a battery backup sump pump system and a secondary pump. It is a great investment and in the long term, it can definitely save you money. You know saving your basement is definitely a priority for most people.
  • One more tip we want to emphasize is the importance of knowing what equipment you have got and whether or not it is working. So be proactive and keep things from flooding essentially. You have to fully understand how your system functions, how it operates, what each individual components it houses. There could be many reasons why your sump doesn’t work, but some causes of failure of your sump pump are very common and what you can do is really important. These are all things which will save you money in the long run because the more you know about the sump pump system the easier it will be for you to maintain a water-free basement.

Types Of Sump Pump Systems

mini sump pump reviewsThe first type that our team is going to present to you is the pedestal sump pump. In case you are wondering what the heck this is, we are going to tell you that this device is an upright pump with an impeller at the base of a pedestal. The motor is located above the pump and is not meant to get wet. Pedestal sump pumps are typically less expensive than submersible pumps, but they also tend to be noisier and are more likely to overheat.

  • Cheaper – will not set you back that much money
  • Will get the job done – you get exactly what you pay for
  • Easy to maintain – just take the stick out and clean it

  • Not as powerful – pedestal pumps aren’t the best for excessive amounts of water
  • Noisy – the motor stays out of the water, you will hear it.

The second type is the submersible sump pump. It is installed in a sump pit and is designed to function underwater. Submersible pumps are usually more expensive but have a longer lifespan than pedestal sump pumps. A submersible sump pump is also quieter and is hidden inside the sump basin, providing a cleaner appearance.

  • Big and reliable – this thing will not break down easily. It can also handle huge quantities of water.
  • Quiet – submersible sump pumps have a silent operation because the motor is submerged
  • Versatile – you can use them for water- draining chores even outside of your basement
  • Powerful

  • Higher price – if you want better performance, reliability, and comfort, you have to pay for it.
  • More complicated installation – they require a larger pit and the piping system is a little bit more tangled up

Our advice here is:

When you choose the type of the sump pump to look for a model with corrosion-free housing materials, a sump cover, sump pump alarm and consider adding a battery backup sump pump, as we have already noted above.

sump pump installationWe know that if you are reading this you aren’t a plumber or a specialist. And if the question “How to install this sump pump system?” and “How should I start?” are contemplating in your head, don’t worry, we are here to help you. So be sure that you will easily handle the installation of your sump pump system.

The installation is really easy and quick. Most of the devices have well-written owner manuals with a section called “Installation”. If you follow the steps it would take you about an hour to install the device.

Installing a primary sump pump and a backup sump pump

Step 1. Turn the power to the main pump off.

Step2.  The Pump must be installed using 1-1/4-inch in. or 1-1/2-inch rigid PVC piping. The check valve, which as we said more often than not, is not included, must be installed between the secondary pump’s tee and the main pump.

Step3. Measure and cut the discharge pipe so that the backup pump is a minimum of 1 inch above the main pump. Why? Because this will allow the main pump to operate normally.

Step4. Check the fit of the components before permanently attaching. You all know that stability is always important. After that, using some PVC cement, glue the tee in place.

Step 5. Insert the flapper valve into the tee. Be sure that the locator tab is in the notch of the tee fitting.

Step 6. Slide the clamp onto the tee.

Step7. Insert the pump into the flapper valve and tilt pump at 30 degrees. When you are ready and it is tilted, the side with the power cord should be up. Tighten the clamp around the pump and the flapper valve.

Step 8. To install a float switch for your standby pump, first, slide the bracket into the slot on top of the tee. Secure it with the screw provided. Remove the top hex-nut from the switch and slide the cord up and out of the way. Slip cord through a slot in the bracket, pull the threaded stud through the hole and secure with nut. Make sure that the float switch is above the pump base and that the power wires do not interfere with the float switch or pump inlet.

Backup system installation:

Step. 1. Place the backup pump on a solid, level surface in the sump pit. Do not place the pump on a loose or sandy surface. Small stones or sand may damage the pump resulting in potential pump failure. No one wants this, right?

Step. 2. Most of these pumps have a 1-1/2-inch NPT discharge. If a 1-1/4-inch the discharge pipe is required, an adapter (sold mostly separately) will be necessary. Smaller diameter piping will reduce pump flow, rate, and performance.

Step. 3. Cut a 4 ft. section of 1-1/4-inch or 1-1/2-inch diameter rigid PVC pipe. Cement the pipe to a threaded fitting. Attach the 1-1/4-inch pipe section to the ESP25 discharge adapter. This shouldn’t be a very tough assignment

Step. 4. Screw the PVC pipe onto pump discharge.

Step. 5. Place the pump with the 4’ section of PVC pipe on a solid, level surface in the sump pit on an elevated surface.

Step. 6. Attach a rubber check valve to the top of the discharge pipe. This will allow the pump or check valve to be removed easily for servicing.

That was the whole installation. Nothing difficult and everybody can handle it. In case you aren’t confident in your skills don’t hesitate to hire a professional plumber. Trusted help should never be overlooked and it might save you plenty of time, money and nerves.
